Depth Of Field

To show depth of field in a photograph, part of the picture is in focus and part is not, as shown by the two photos below. By keeping my model, Amanda, in focus with the background out of focus, the fact that she is in front is emphasized. This shallow depth of field is achieved by using a small opening, or large aperture. The F-stop I used for the shot with shallow depth of field was F4. To create the photo with a large depth of field, meaning the whole photo is in focus, I used a smaller aperture, larger opening, at F22.
